Flowers Around Town in August

Wednesday, 13 August 2025

There is a wonderful colony of crimson-eyed rosemallow, or call it swamp rosemallow

along Route 12 in Kingwood Township. Their Latin name is Hibiscus moscheutos and they are native
to New Jersey. As you can see they are happy growing in places with damp soil, like this roadside ditch.

Look in. It is easy to see how it got the common name of crimson-eyed rosemallow.

While most of the flowers are white there are just a few that are pink. They also have a red eye.

Wow. The earliest goldenrod, Solidago juncea, is in flower on Route 519. I think of it as a signal
that the seasons are, gradually, about to turn. Other signs: cicadas in daytime, katydids at night.
