Flowers Around Town in August

Sunday, 31 August 2025

Just a few days later and many places along Route 12 look edged with gold as tickseed
Bidens aristosa is flowering in sunny sites with moist soil such as ditches and in fields.

Along Route 12 a fall blooming native annual flower, tickseed, Bidens aristosa, just coming into bloom.

Costco is pushing the season with bags of spring flowering bulbs offered for sale. My opinion -
.
it is early for planting. Places where they might be planted are currently filled with actively growing plants.

Buy now, if you must. But be sure to write yourself an aide-memoire so you'll remember to plant them in the fall.

Not asters. This is ironweed, Vernonia novaboracensis, a lovely native perannial in flower along Route 12.

Wal-Mart has numerous pots of chrysanthemums in flower, tricked into flowering now

by artificially providing longer nights and shorter days where they are grown.

There is a wonderful colony of crimson-eyed rosemallow, or call it swamp rosemallow

along Route 12 in Kingwood Township. Their Latin name is Hibiscus moscheutos and they are native
to New Jersey. As you can see they are happy growing in places with damp soil, like this roadside ditch.

Look in. It is easy to see how it got the common name of crimson-eyed rosemallow.

While most of the flowers are white there are just a few that are pink. They also have a red eye.

Wow. The earliest goldenrod, Solidago juncea, is in flower on Route 519. I think of it as a signal
that the seasons are, gradually, about to turn. Other signs: cicadas in daytime, katydids at night.
